Welcome to RICAP – Supporting Alternative Education in Rhode Island

Alternative education is a different way of learning for students who may not succeed in a traditional classroom. These programs offer smaller settings, more flexibility, and personalized support so students can learn at their own pace and in ways that work best for them.

The Rhode Island Consortium of Alternative Programs (RICAP) is a group of educators and schools working together to support alternative education across the state. RICAP helps connect programs, share ideas, and make sure students and families know about the options available to them.

Our mission is to support the development of policies and a parallel accountability system that reflects the unique pathways, growth, and successes of students in alternative settings—especially those who are over-aged, under-credited, system-impacted, or historically underserved.
